Homeschooling

What do these students have in common?

  • K.—Age 15.  Just released from a drug rehab program, still experiencing occasional flashbacks.

  • J.—Age 12.  Read adequately but refused to write.  That means, refused to write anything.  Emotional outbursts prevented normal relations with parents and friends.

  • E.—Age 16.  Never did assignments in Language Arts or Social Studies.  As a result, he was expelled from an independent school he really enjoyed attending.  Poor reading and writing skills were masked by his “I don’t care” attitude.

  • R.—Age 17.  Childhood health problems held him back until adolescence.  When he was ready to learn, school was not ready to teach from the beginning up.

Unexpectedly, what all these students have in common is their success!

Despite their earlier difficulties, these students went on to have a highly successful and productive term in the Active Learning homeschool program.  Well-planned individualized instruction, delivered with patience and humor made the difference.

K. learned to lengthen his study sessions until he could concentrate normally.

J.’s first success came when he made a photo journal of his friends and family with captions he wrote himself.  (This also marked the first step in improving his people relations as well.)  He finished the semester by writing an interesting and readable two-page report.

E. had a big incentive to learn.  He knew he would be re-admitted to his school as soon as he proved he could handle a normal homework load.  His gift of gab was soon channeled into some equally fluent writing, and his reading improved as well through discussion, example and practice.  As he grew intellectually, he also blossomed emotionally, and his mother delighted in his new and heartfelt interest in others.

R. has just started his homeschooling, but he is already reading better.  Last week, after hearing him read aloud, his mother called and commented, “You have just saved a child’s life!”  I couldn’t have asked for anything better.
